Object Management Group Chairs Update Technology Standards
Focus on modeling, manufacturing, blockchain, space communications

NEEDHAM, MA – April 28, 2020 – International technology standards consortium Object Management Group® (OMG®) announced important updates from its quarterly membership meeting, which took place online from March 23-27, 2020. The chairs of OMG Task Forces (TFs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) presented updates about their standards work that will influence the future direction of technology, especially when it comes to, modeling, manufacturing, blockchain and space communications, among other areas.

Here is a summary of the accomplishments and work in process of OMG working groups:

"The Agent Platform Special Interest Group (Agent PSIG) discussed a new approach for the Agent and Event Metamodel, which  improves the agent metamodel by integrating with SysML v2; we will continue work on this at our next meeting. The Agent PSIG presentations also included a survey of Microservices oriented Multi-Agent Systems (MAS). Also, the Agent PSIG will discuss the upcoming RFP for the standardization of lightweight agent platform for Internet of Agent (IoA) to support agents with limited computing and memory resources," said Zack Hashemi, Agent PSIG Co-chair and Principal Software Engineer, Innovative Solutions, Multi Agency Collaboration Environment (MACE).

"The Artificial Intelligence Platform Task Force heard two presentations on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and bias, and gathered additional input to formulate its roadmap. The AI Forum initially planned for March was rescheduled for our September meeting," said Claude Baudoin, Co-chair, Artificial Intelligence Platform Task Force and Owner and Principal Consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"The Business Modeling & Integration (BMI) Domain Task Force has a record five work items progressing in parallel, and reviewed their status: The Business Architecture Core Metamodel (BACM), the Standard Business Report Model (SBRM), and three modeling specifications related to the work of the BPM+ Health working group," said Claude Baudoin, Co-chair, Business Modeling & Integration Domain Task Force and Owner and Principal Consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"The Cloud Working Group heard from the Cloud Security Alliance, with which it has initiated a liaison agreement, and also from Steve Woodward of Cloud Perspectives on the progress of ISO standards work in the cloud space. Several discussion papers (data governance, cloud in retail, cyber insurance) are in various stages of planning," said Claude Baudoin, Co-chair of the Cloud Working Group and Owner and Principal Consultant at cébé IT and Knowledge Management.

"The Decision Modeling and Notation 1.4 Revision Task Force (DMN RTF) published version 1.3 of Decision Model and Notation (DMN).  In the next quarter, the DMN RTF will reconvene to start work on version 1.4," said Dr. Alan N Fish, Co-chair of the DMN RTF and Principal Consultant, Decision Solutions, FICO, EMEA Office.

Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems DTF (ManTIS) convened in a well-attended web-meeting all day on March 23, 2020. Besides interesting presentations given to the group, we achieved progress in our discussion about the interoperability of modeling tools and it was decided to pursue the drafting of an RFP on a Model Integration & Transformation Facility. For the next meeting in June, we anticipate to reach out to other groups in the industry to discuss mutual themes of interest including, formal description methods and standards for manufacturing Digital Masters and Digital Twins," said Uwe Kaufmann, Owner and CEO, ModelAlchemy Consulting and Co-chair of the ManTIS DTF.

"The Middleware and Related Services (MARS) Platform Task Force (PTF) proved it can function in the virtual meeting space. We continued our collaboration with the Blockchain Platform Special Interest Group (BC PSIG) and reviewed the responses to the Blockchain Ecosystem RFI that we expect will result in a number of new RFPs (exact nature TBD) to be handled in MARS. This was in addition to other ongoing BC PSIG associated efforts, e.g., Linked Encryption Transaction Streams (LETS) RFP and the Distributed Immutable Data Objects (DIDO) Reference Architecture (RA) Discussion Paper. The initial submission for the Space Telecommunication Interface (STI) for Software Defined Radios (SDRs) was also reviewed; we fully expect it will be adopted this June," said Charlotte Wales, Co-chair of the Middleware and Related MARS PTF and Systems Engineer, Process Specialist, JackRabbit Consulting.

"The SysML v2 Submission Team (SST) continues to progress toward their initial submission, and requested a one cycle extension to submit on August 17, 2020, and present at the September OMG meeting in response to both the SysML v2 RFP and the SysML v2 API & Services RFP. It also made public an incremental release on April 10, 2020," said Sandy Friedenthal, SST Co-chair and Principal Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin.

A summary webinar was hosted by OMG VP & Technical Director Jason McC. Smith and OMG Director Member Engagement to provide an update on all these items and more. Click here for an  on-demand replay.
