OMG Begins Work on Specification for Assuring Dependability of Consumer Devices; Solicits Input from Industry

Needham, MA, USA – January 24, 2012 – OMG’s® Systems Assurance Task Force has issued a Request for Information as the first step in the process of creating a new standard for “Assuring Dependability of Consumer Devices.” Responses to the RFI are due by May 20, 2012.

“Consumer devices” is a broad category of general end-user products that includes automobiles, consumer electronics, service robots, and smart houses. Unlike industrial devices, consumer devices are massive in numbers, used by the general public, lower in cost, maintained infrequently if ever, and used in an open, dynamic and diverse environment. These devices are often networked together so software issues can spread well beyond the initially affected device. This RFI is the first step toward developing a specification to standardize the process, methodologies, and tools to assure the software dependability of consumer devices.

Accountability of manufacturing companies has become crucial, and consumer device providers need to assure that their products are sufficiently dependable whenever the users operate them for any purposes. To satisfy these requirements, the Systems Assurance Task Force is requesting information on process models, methodologies, support tools and the interfaces to realize simultaneous development of embedded control software and dependability cases.

The Assuring Dependability of Consumer Devices RFI is now open for comment and participation. A supporting whitepaper is posted at https://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?sysa/2011-12-08. Responses from anyone in industry, government or academia with practical knowledge of assuring dependability of consumer devices (industrial products: automobiles, service robots, smart houses, avionics and any products relevant to this category) are welcome and encouraged. Full details, contacts for questions about the RFI and instructions on responding are available in the Assuring Dependability of Consumer Devices RFI document.
